Hello, my name is Colm Clarke, and I’ve lived in the Carrigans area of County Donegal for most of my life. And I’ve worked in the flax and linen industry up until 1955 Last year, here at the Monreagh Heritage Centre in County Donegal, we decided to film the process of producing linen. There are six steps in the process. Step 1: we sow the flax seed in April. Step 2: the flax plant grows to full height after three months. Step 3: we pull it and put it in a dam to soak for 2 weeks. Step 4: Spread it and dry it on a grass field. It takes about ten days. Step 5: Plant is lifted and bundled together into ‘stooks’ for five days. Step 6: The sixth step of the process is by hand, ready for the mill to produce linen. Now we’re ready to sow the flax This is the flax we pulled the last day. We’re going to take it and soak it now.
You can soak it the Ulster Scots way or the English way. We can soak it or ‘steep’ it. The English word is ‘Rhett’ We’ll put it in now and ‘rhett’ it You put the stones on top to keep it down We keep it in here for 7 to eleven days. You then take it out and break it. And if it breaks ‘clean’ (the outer skin come off) it is ready for taking out and spreading…. and dry it on the grass green This is a band made of rushes The process we will do now is known as ‘stutching’ This would have been done like this up until the 1930s. This process that I have done is breaking the inside fibers of the plant It’s the inside fibers that give us pure linen This process is known as ‘crimping’ This breaks the fibers further down so that we can take it to the next process. This is the ‘brushing’ part that takes off the coarser part of the plant.
That’s the finished product. That is pure linen. In the modern mill this process was done with machinery. This product would now be sent to the linen mill to be turned into thread The spinning wheel was used in the 18th & 19th century to produce thread. This process was used before the big mills. This is an example of what was made in the 19th century Well, we hoped you enjoyed the film, and we would love to see you here at the Monreagh Heritage Centre in Carrigans, County Donegal, where I can give you a personal demonstration.
Hi this is julie with beadaholique.com pursuits so i’ve laid out an assortment here and i have a couple different styles going obviously and you’ll see i have different embossed patterns and then i also have different patinas on top of them one thing i do want to let you know is that this is actually the same patina but it’s a different coverage and these are all gonna vary of course these are different sheets because one is embossed and one isn’t but the patina you’ll see even if it’s the same style of patina the actual pattern and the amount it covers is going to vary which makes for really unique art pieces so I’ve got these wonderful embossed sheets and also a couple solid ones too that are thirty six gauge thirty-six gauge isn’t gonna be it’s really flexible I can just bend it with my hands is not taking any strength and then I’ve also got a much stronger very sturdy 24 gauge sheet as well and these are all in the copper you’ll see they’ve got their nice copper backs I have an inspiration project here that I’ve done and that’s a little headband where I’ve taken the lillypilly copper sheets actually cut a round to fit within the bezel setting here and then I took little ones that I hole punched and then I just curled their edges with my fingers so I want to show you how easy this is to cut I’ve got some sheets here I’ve already been working on now if you’re working with a 36 gauge you can cut it with a pair of scissors you can just go like that so you can get nice curves to it or if you like you can cut it with a pair of metal shears it’s gonna cut real easy as well and what’s great about the 36 gauge is you can actually hold punch it with a paper punch now bear in mind paper punches were not intended for this purpose so it is going to wear down your paper punch a lot quicker than if you’re using paper all you have to do put it in there and what’s nice you can actually see where you’re gonna punch it and I like to use both hands so I put it over it squeeze and it punches a little circle for you or whatever shape punch you have you can tell it does ruffle the edges a little bit and you can just flatten that out with your fingers or if you like you can curve it up into whatever shape you desire the edges will be a little bit sharp this is nice and rounded here but if you had a paper cutter that had square corners they are going to be a little bit sharp so bear that in mind now if you wanted to use the 24 gauge copper sheeting what you’re going to need to cut it with is not a pair of scissors but you will need your middle shears or a jeweler saw and so to cut this you can see I’ve already cut a little notch just cut it like so and it’s very easy to cut and again it will have some sharp edges so you might want to file those down with a diamond file now another option in addition to the paper punches are metal hole punches I’ve got a little round one here a 1.8 millimeter and you’ll see it all you have to do put the sheet between the two noses and punch you have a perfect little hole and that is all there is to cutting and using the lillypilly copper sheets you
Hi, Aeri’s Kitchen friends, Picnic season is getting closer, so today, I will share a unique and delicious kimbap recipe using a rolled egg. It’s called… Compared to normal kimbap, this rolled egg kimbap needs less ingredients. You can replace the spam with these hot dogs, ham, or crab sticks. The key point for getting your rolled eggs perfectly round is to chop the spam, green onion, and carrot into tiny pieces. You can use a food processor to help with this too. Break the eggs and season them with some salt. Whisk them gently. Add all the chopped ingredients into the egg, and mix everything together.
Now, pour half of the egg mixture into a preheated 8-inch nonstick pan with 1 Tbsp of cooking oil. Spread it out evenly and fry it on medium. Since the egg mixture has many chunks in it, it is better to roll the egg quickly before the egg starts to get cooked, or it will be difficult to get a nice shape. After rolling up the egg, keep rolling it around to cook the whole surface evenly. It took about 3 minutes total to cook this rolled egg. The rolled egg may not be perfectly round. So, here is how to fix it. When the rolled egg is still hot, put the rolled egg on a bamboo mat for kimbap. Roll the egg with the bamboo mat to form it into a round shape.
Set it aside for a while. Meanwhile, make another rolled egg with the remaining egg mixture. A few minutes later, the rolled egg will be round like this. Now, let’s prepare the kimbap rice. Combine the cooked short grain rice, the salt, the sesame oil, and the sesame seeds. Mix everything together. Divide the rice mixture in half to make 2 kimbap rolls. We need 3 sheets of this dried laver for kimbap. Cut 1 sheet of the dried laver in half. Wrap the rolled egg with the half sheet of the dried laver. Then, place another sheet of dried laver on a bamboo mat. Make sure that the shiny part of it goes to the bottom. Put half of the rice on the dried laver and spread it out evenly.
Here, leave about an inch of space empty at the end. Put the rolled egg on the rice. Roll it up with the egg inside to make the kimbap. Squeeze the bamboo mat so that the kimbap will become firm. Use the same process for the other roll of kimbap. And then, slice the kimbap into bite-sized pieces before serving. You can eat this kimbap as it is, but to enjoy it even more, you can also serve it with yellow pickled radish.
Make this delicious kimbap someday and go on a picnic with your loved ones. 🙂 Thank you for watching, see you next time Bye~~ 💕 .
Sarah: Hey gang. It’s Sarah from Sleepopolis. Today, we’ll be comparing four sheet sets from some of the most popular bedding brands, Boll & Branch, Parachute, Snowe, and Brooklinen. Let’s take a look at each sheet set side-by-side so that you can decide which one is best for you. Sarah: First up, we’ve got the Classic Core Sheet Set from Brooklinen, just what I’ve got on the mattress right now. These sheets are made from 100 percent long-staple cotton, feature a percale weave, and a 270 thread count. Basically, they’re going to offer this really soft feel, super light, airy, and breathable, but also this crisp hotel bed feel.
When I say crisp, I mean super crisp. Percale sheets already have a tendency to be more crisp than sateen sheets for example, but these are maybe the crispest percale sheets I’ve ever tested. Like I said, they’re also light, airy, and breathable, so if you’re a sleeper who needs help staying cool during the night, or if you’re prone to night sweats, these are going to help keep you cool. Also, if you love a crisp set of sheets, these might be right up your alley. They also come in this very charming tote bag, which in my opinion is a bonus. Another bonus, in my opinion, is that the fitted sheet is labeled. You can breeze past that fitted sheet shuffling. You’ve got the short side labeled short, long side labeled long. I like little touches like that. Of all the sheet sets we’re looking at here, these are the least expensive, but certainly not sacrificing any quality.
The price ranges from about 109 to 140 depending on which size you get, a great value. On to Boll & Branch. Right now on the mattress, I’ve got the brand’s most popular sheet set which is the Solid Hemmed Sheet Set. These sheets are made from 100 percent long-staple organic cotton, feature a 300 thread count, and a sateen weave. As compared to the percale-woven sheets we just saw from Brooklinen, the sateen weave is going to offer a feel that’s much less crisp and much more silky. Additionally, these, like I said, are certified organic, and they’re also a product of Fair Trade manufacturing. That means that the farming partners of Boll & Branch must be paid a living wage. For you eco-friendly sleepers out there, if ethically sourced sheets is a big factor for you, you might be particularly compatible with these.
They do offer a super smooth hand feel, like I said, very soft. They are a little bit steeper in price as compared to the Brooklinen sheets. They range from about 200 to 295. Again, they’re organic, they’re ethically sourced, they feel very durable, so they might just be worth the investment. Next up we’ve got the sateen set and the percale set from Snowe. I’ve got the percale set on the bed right now, which is why the garment bag that it comes in looks a little thinner than the other one. Both sets are made from 100 percent long-staple Egyptian cotton, which is leaving them both feeling super soft and also very durable. The feel is going to differ depending on the weave. The sateen set is going to bring this silky smooth like we just saw with Boll & Branch.
You saw the difference between percale and sateen. The sateen is going to offer a silkier smooth feel, lie a little bit heavier on the body, be a little bit thicker in weight. Then you’ve got the percale set which is very crisp, again, offering this crisp hotel bed feel, and also be more airy and breathable, helping you to keep a little bit cooler. The reason that these are a little bit different from some other sheet sets from some other brands I’ve tested is that while they do differ in feel, they really don’t differ in appearance. That’s because Snowe, they say it’s a matter of personal preference, prefer their sheet sets to all be matte in appearance. Again, with the sateen set, you’re not going to get that luminous sheen that often comes with a sateen weave. Again, both very soft, both very durable. I would recommend the percale more to sleepers who need help staying cool and prefer that crisp feel. I’d recommend the sateen to those who maybe prefer their sheets to be a little bit heavier in weight, lie a little bit heavier on the body, but they both are very soft and very durable.
Price ranges quite a bit from about 188 to 228. It really depends on the size you get and which sheet set you’re getting. Last but certainly not least are these sheet sets from Parachute. I’ve got the sateen set and the percale set. Similar to the percale and sateen sets we just saw from Snowe, these are made from 100 percent long-staple Egyptian cotton. Again, they’re going to be soft and have a very durable quality. Unlike the sheets that we just saw from Snowe, these are not designed to be similar in appearance. Like I said, with Snowe, they’re both designed to have this matte appearance, not the case with Parachute.
We’ve got the sateen set which offers this very pretty, super lustrous sheen. It’s got a really pronounced luminous sheen. Then you’ve got the percale set which is going to be more matte in appearance, which is also contributing to a lighter color. As far as the feel goes, they’re both very true to their percale and sateen personalities. The sateen is giving me this silky, buttery, smooth feel. It’s going to lie a little bit heavier on the body, offering this body-conforming drape. Then you’ve got the percale which is going to be lighter, airy, more breathable, and do a good job helping to keep you cool throughout the night.
I will definitely recommend the percale set to folks who need a little bit more help keeping cool. The sateen is probably going to be better suited for the cooler months when you need a little help keeping warm. As far as price range goes, pretty similar to Brooklinen, it’s about 109 to 170, depending on which size you get. Again, a great value. We’ve seen what they’re all made of, but let’s just recap all of these sheet sets highlights so you can get a better idea about which one is best for you.
As far as the Brooklinen Classic Core Sheet Set, definitely recommending these sheets to sleepers who sleep hot. Of all the sheet sets, they’re definitely going to be the lightest, the coolest, and the most breathable. Additionally, if you love a crisp set of sheets, those are probably going to be right up your alley. Boll & Branch, if ethically sourced sheets is an important factor for you, those are definitely the ones that I’m going to recommend. Also, if you like a sateen sheet set with more of a subtle luster but still that silky smooth feel, they’re going to be a great pick. As far as Snowe goes, I’m going to say the percale is going to be better for sleepers who run hot.
The sateen is going to be better for folks who prefer that subtle luster, but really silky smooth feel. Because they’re made of Egyptian cotton, if, Egyptian cotton, you prefer that specific type of cotton, they’re going to offer that Egyptian cotton quality of durability. The Parachute sheets which admittedly are my personal favorite, they are my personal favorite, because the sateen woven sheet set from Parachute offers such a lustrous sheen. I’m definitely recommending the sateen woven set from Parachute for you sleepers who really prefer that very shiny, luminous sheen.
The percale set from Parachute, it’s going to appeal more to sleepers who prefer that matte appearance and sleepers who run hot and need a little bit of help having a breathable sheet set cool them down. Sarah: That wraps up this review. For every last detail on all of these sheet sets, be sure to check out my full written review which is linked below. I hope you found this video to be helpful. – That has to be one of the coolest bowls of noodles that I’ve ever seen being made, ever. (upbeat music) This entire bowl, is all just one noodle. That is one single noodle. (upbeat music) Good morning, I hope you’re having an amazing day, it’s Mark Wiens. We just arrived to Weishan, which is in Dali in Yunnan Province, China. And today is gonna be another incredible day, but a very diverse day of food in Yunnan. We’re starting here in the village, we’re gonna enjoy a few bowls of noodles. And then after that we’ll be visiting an authentic very well preserved Muslim village. But first, oh I think we’ve just arrived. This is the spot for breakfast. Breakfast bowl of noodles number one. Hello! We’re gonna try to get a look into the kitchen, where they are assembling the bowls of noodles. And as soon as you step in here, this is, this is a meat sauna. You can smell the, these are pork noodles. And you can smell the porky aromas back here.
This is a special type of rice noodle that is common in this part of Yunnan. But it’s rare to find elsewhere, and it’s a rice noodle that they make with, it’s not with raw rice powder, but it’s made with pre-cooked, rice that’s cooked, and then ground, and then made into noodles. It comes with two components, one is the bowl of noodles, with soup. And the other is the bowl of pork with all the seasonings, spices. So what you do is you take some of the noodles and you dip them into the soup with the pork and all the spices before you eat it.
And then it comes with some pickles, there’s some peanuts, there’s some just wonderful looking things. The soup is a pork bone soup, you can see how it’s almost milky in color, how it’s been boiled for so long. I just have to taste the plain soup first. Mmm, mmm. Really, really rich. A little bit, not too oily. And it’s not salty yet. And then this is the soup that’s full of flavor. You can see the pork, there’s skin, oh, look at that. Oh, it’s like pulled pork and then just a chunk of skin, and then she added in a few scoops, she asked me if I wanted it spicy, which, of course I had to say yes.
So look at that soup, it’s just, oh there’s chili oil in there, it’s, okay, lemme just taste this. There’s sesame seeds in there as well. Oh, oh that is superb. It’s not sweet at all, it’s just you can really taste the sesame seeds in there. That has a nice chili burn to it, and then it’s porky. Okay, into the soup. I mix it in with some of that pork. Oh that looks incredible. Oh, that is sensational. It’s really nice and spicy. The sesame seed oil flavor in there really stands out. And then the pork is just, just fall apart like shredded tender. The noodles are very nice and soft. They’re not like mushy, and they’re just a tiny bit gummy in texture.
The noodles and the soup broth, are very plain on their own, but all the flavor is coming in that pork, and that seasoning, and all those spices in there. And that is extraordinary flavor. Okay, now I’m gonna try to fish out that piece of skin. Oh, mmm. Oh that just, that literally just disintegrates in your mouth. Oh you don’t need to chew that. It’s just completely soft. And it tastes like it’s been boiled and rendered down so it’s mostly skin and like collagen I think. Mmm. That one has a little bit of a sweet taste. And peanuts. But this broth, is next level. (upbeat music) Oh, what a way to start this morning. And it’s even better because it’s kind of cold and rainy outside.
That is, that hits the spot. Most of the buildings in this ancient town of Weishan date back to the 1400’s. And this was one of the strongholds of the kingdom in Yunnan. And it’s so well preserved, it’s so beautiful. I love how it’s quiet, and it’s so charming. So we’re just gonna walk around for a little bit, and then after that we’re gonna eat another bowl of noodles. (upbeat music) Okay, we’re just stopping at a street food stall here.
– Yeah, this is like Dali’s specialty, so this is basically the rice cake’s same texture with the rice noodle we just had. – It’s like a sheet of the noodles that we just, okay hold on for this. (engine starting) What’s the name of it again? (speaking foreign language) – And then the noodle is (speaking foreign language) – Ah, okay. (speaking foreign language) – Means strips (speaking foreign language) – Means something bigger. – Alright. (speaking foreign language) – Oh she puts that inside of it? – Yeah, yeah. – Oh wow. – Something extra. (speaking foreign language) Yep. Oh yeah but we’ll try it here. (speaking foreign language) – Kind of like burrito style. Yeah this looks and smells fantastic. Mmm. (laughs) Oh, oh that is very very tasty. Kind of dense, because you’ve got that rice, that rice tortilla.
And then you’ve got the crispy fluffy donut on the inside, but you’ve got all that flavoring. The chili sauce, the pickles go in there very nicely. The peanuts. Okay. And this is a snack we can eat while walking around I think. (speaking foreign language) – That was great walking around the old town and we are walking down an alley now to go eat our next bowl of noodles. Oh so this is the one noodle here. (upbeat music) Wow, that’s amazing. And we’re here to eat what is called One Noodle, because it really is one strand of noodle. (speaking foreign language) – This is things you put on top of the noodle soup in the end. (upbeat music) (speaking foreign language) (laughs) – Yeah, you forget every time.
(laughs) – That has to be one of the coolest bowls of noodles that I have ever seen being made, ever. It’s just, it’s just a beautiful work of art how she prepares that bowl of noodles. And it really, in your bowl, you have one single noodle. And from what Lucy was telling me about this particular restaurant, this is the original place to eat this One Noodle. And they won the World Record, the China record for the longest noodle in all of China. I think they had a noodle competition, oh yeah you can see on the walls, some of the photos that they have on display. They made a noodle that was a couple kilometers in length. So they can make, you get one noodle here, that’s all you eat is one noodle.
In order to eat this bowl of noodles you have to eat it all in one bite. No, I’m just joking. (laughs) You can break the noodle, it’s acceptable to break the noodle. But look at that, it’s just coiled around a million times, that’s all just a single blob. This entire bowl, is all just one noodle. That is one single noodle. I guess I definitely have to try the one noodle first.
(chuckling) Mmm. Oh. Not only is it one noodle, but that one noodle is amazing. It’s gummy, it’s not overcooked, it’s a little bit al dente. It is like a perfect thickness. Mmm, and that’s like chili oil soup, you can taste the schezwan pepper in there. And then this is some kind of garlic and water. Oh, excellent. Okay, I think that’s good for my seasoning. I forgot a little bit of vinegar in there. That’s a really good noodle. Now lemme taste some of that broth. On the top is kind of some chili oil.
But the it is a, kind of a meaty, kind of a thick broth. Mmm, mmm. Oh with that garlic in there, I love that garlic in there. That fresh garlic. Oh that adds such a little thing that adds so much. The most impressive thing about that bowl of noodle was watching her make it and bowl the noodle. That was, that was a sight to see. We’re just exiting out the old gate.
That was, it’s a really nice place that you can visit. And I’m pretty full of noodles right now. From here we are driving to a well-preserved traditional Muslim village. And they are known for their food as well, so we’re gonna discover and eat some more delicious food and just walk around that village next. (upbeat music) We have just arrived to Donglianhua, and in Chinese that translates to: the Eastern lotus pond village. And so you come into this village, its absolutely beautiful. At the entrance, there is a lotus pond. And then it’s surrounded by rice fields. It’s an ancient Muslim village.
And from what Lucy was telling me, it’s not a touristy village at all, so there’s not like souvenir shops. It’s not like an attraction village. But it’s one of the most well-preserved Muslim villages in this entire area. And so we’re gonna have a chance to eat, and then we’re gonna have a chance just to walk around and see. There’s also some very well-preserved mosques as well. (horn honks) We are on our way to go to one of the courtyards where there is a lady who, she has a courtyard, she has a house, she has restaurant, she cooks. It’s gonna be some delicious food. Look at this grand entrance, this gate.
And the decoration, the painting. And step inside of here. There’s paintings, there’s artwork, it’s so quiet, it’s so peaceful, and this is where we’re gonna eat lunch. Something that’s very interesting to me, because my wife is Thai and we’re based in Bangkok, we’re based in Thailand. Is that the family who owns this property, and this courtyard, she was just explaining to us that their family had to flee to Thailand and so they lived in Chiang Mai for many years. And so they have roots both here in Yunnan, and Chiang Mai as well in Thailand. (speaking foreign language) – We’re in the kitchen now, and she’s gonna be making a couple of different dishes. The first thing that she’s making is a Muslim Yunnanese style noodle.
And the important ingredients that she mentioned are especially the green pumpkin, as well as potato. And now she just finished chopping up some cured goose, which she got out of the freezer, and that’s gonna also flavor the noodles. And she’s gonna, we’ll see what else she makes. (meat sizzling) (speaking foreign language) – That’s the ginger. – The beef, beef and ginger? – Yeah. (meat sizzling) – This one is still for the noodles? – Yeah, yeah. (meat sizzling) – She added quite a generous amount of oil to the wok, and then she added in some of the beef which is already cut into little pieces. And then she added in a bunch of onions, and then in goes the tomatoes.
But wow, that aroma is already smelling incredible. (speaking foreign language) – All the ingredients that she cooked are for the soup of the noodles, but now she’s actually making the noodles from scratch with flour and mixing in some water, and just slightly kneading it and massaging it. (speaking foreign language) – It’s a lot of effort, and it’s a lot of work, but I can guarantee you that the result is gonna be more than impressive. (speaking foreign language) – The dough is resting and rising. She’s gonna get started on a beef salad that she’s making. (speaking foreign language) – She has already precooked the beef, because the beef takes, it actually takes days to prepare. But she’s showed us some of the raw beef. She massages it in salt, and then let’s that rest for two days. And then the beef is braised in a broth and liquid that contains many different spices.
There’s black cardamom, and there’s schezwan peppers, there’s dry chili, there’s caramel, which is what makes the broth really dark. And then that’s braised for a few hours at least. I actually had no clue as to how she was gonna assemble a salad, but she is just spiraling it. Like spokes on a wheel. Oh, that’s gorgeous. (speaking foreign language) – She’s just hand ripping them into the boiling water. Oh I love this style of noodle. And just like, rough homestyle noodles. (upbeat music) The noodles back in. (speaking foreign language) (upbeat music) (speaking foreign language) – It keeps getting more and more complex, she keeps adding things. She had a separate pan of the soup broth, which is beef bones broth she then boiled. And then she drained the water out of the noodles and put the noodles back into the beef broth. Then she added the goose, cured goose fat. And goose, then she, oh and she’s dishing it out.
Then she added the pumpkin mixture, she added the onions beef mixture, and it is ready. Wow, that looks hearty. (speaking foreign language) (upbeat music) (speaking foreign language) – I’m walking out of the kitchen just amazed, just flabbergasted. What a meal, she is a master chef. Okay, so we’re in the courtyard, we’re sitting down for lunch now. This is a picture perfect setting, it’s gorgeous. The courtyard, the scenery, and her cooking on top of that.
I am like overwhelmed right here. The food looks unbelievable. The beef salad is not only one of the prettiest beef salads I’ve ever seen in my life, it might be one of the prettiest dishes I’ve ever seen in my life. On the bottom you will see it’s all shredded radish as well as more of that same dressing. And it’s just, it’s just filled. So I think you can kind of get a little bit of everything with that beef. Oh, wow. That is sensational. Oh, that’s stunning. Mmm. Oh that beef is so tender. And the flavor is just embedded within the veins of that beef. And it’s, oh that’s extreme flavor. And then you’ve got that really crisp, really refreshing radish shreds on the bottom there. You’ve got that dressing, you can taste all that chili oil. You can really taste the sesame oil, and the sesame seeds in there.
And next up for the noodles, which she made completely from scratch, by hand. Sheets of noodles, there’s onion in here. Oh man, this looks, it doesn’t get fresher than this. Mmm. Oh, oh wow that’s stunning. Those noodles are so silky smooth. They’re not like delicate, like thin noodles, these are hearty, slightly thick, a little bit gummy. But you can taste the difference in how they’re handmade. It’s absolutely stunning. Unbelievable.
That is one of those dishes that will change your life. The final dish we got here is pumpkin, steamed pumpkin. And she made this with some ginger, and this just looks delicious as well. Oh, even the pumpkin’s outstanding. It’s like melt in your mouth. Oh, that texture. It’s really really fragrant. It’s a little bit sweet. It’s, mmm, it’s not starchy at all, but more silky. (speaking foreign language) (laughs) (upbeat music) – This is one of those dishes that I never want to end. I just want it to be an everlasting dish. It’s absolutely insane. (upbeat music) (sighs) – Every single bite of this salad, has just blown me away. (upbeat music) (speaking foreign language) – Okay. I had no idea what to expect when we first entered this gate, but now I can safely say that you will find one of the world’s greatest beef salads behind this door. And those are really recipes and dishes that have been preserved through her family and they’re really hard to find.
She made it with love. That was an honor to have such a culinary experience like that. Chickens for sale. (chickens clucking) (speaking foreign language) (upbeat music) – We’ve just arrived to the village mosque, and it’s an extremely well-preserved wooden mosque. Which dates back to the Ch’ing Dynasty, sometime around the 1700’s. And up here there’s a school. Wow, this is gorgeous architecture. A few flights of steps and we made it to the very top. Wow, the views are spectacular. And you can see over the entire courtyard of the mosque on this side, and then over here on this side, you’ve got a nice view of the valley, and the mountains in the background.
And rice fields outside of the village. (upbeat music) (speaking foreign language) – We’re in Dali new town here. And we’re at a restaurant tonight, to eat an ethnic Chinese type of food which is Jingpo food. (speaking foreign language) – There’s just a rainbow full of ingredients that’s so many ingredients on the table, and seasonings. I saw some grasshoppers that we’re gonna try as well for dinner tonight. All of the dishes are ready. We’ve got a little bit of a feast here for dinner tonight. There’s so many dishes on the table, I think we have at least 10 different dishes. It’s really interesting for me in watching them cook. This food, the Jingpo food, it comes from the region of China which is near to the border of Myanmar. And that’s sort of the area where China, as well as Myanmar, and Thailand, and Laos, that area where the cultures all come together.
And that’s the, so the food you can see many similarities of ingredients. It’s colorful, there’s chilies, there’s lots of fresh herbs. And just a colorful spectrum of different dishes. Since the grasshoppers happen to be right in front of me, I’m gonna begin with the grasshoppers. She deep fried them, and then just seasoned them with a little bit of powdery seasoning. So these should be crispy and beautiful. Oh, look at how golden they are. Oh yeah, those are good. They have a little bit of a sausagey flavor, and nice and crispy. A wonderful snack. Next up I’m gonna try some of the chicken salad. This is one of their signature dishes. It’s shredded chicken, and then she mixed it with minced chili. There’s some herbs in there, and there’s some chilies on the side too. You can taste a little bit of the chilies in there.
Oh, oh, that chili’s pretty sweet, and a little bit spicy. Okay, over here is one of their signature dishes, which is fried ribs, with lemongrass. And I love how rough cut it is, just like a stack of lemongrass on the top of this dish. Mmm hmm. Oh those are awesomely good. The pork is nice and crispy from being deep fried. This one is a minced pork salad, and again it’s very finely chopped with lots of herbs in there. There are peanuts in here, and chilies. And this looks very very Thai or Burmese. – White celery. – Oh, it’s white celery in there too. Mmm. Oh that one is, that one is awesome. It’s extremely refreshing. To me it almost tastes like Tabbouleh, like parsley that’s been chopped up like that. This one is ferns and I think she just blanched the ferns, and then it’s served with this sauce. This sauce looks fantastic.
Mmm. Oh that sauce is wonderful. And it’s a yellow pea paste kind of like block, and then she kind of mixed it up with some spices as well. There’s some chilies, and there’s both fresh chilies and dried chilies in there. Mmm. Oh. You know that’s not the most attractive looking dish, but it’s really tasty. It has this incredible smokey flavor, and then it’s a little bit starchy, a little bit goopy, but the flavor’s amazing. This one is an omelet that he made with climbing wattle shoots. And this is very popular in Thailand as well. Mmm. Okay, it’s a little bit of an oil sponge. But it is pretty tasty. The climbing wattle has a nice like kind of green taste to it. I think the last dish is the banana blossom salad, or mix. Mmm. Oh that’s really good, it’s really really juicy.
(speaking foreign language) (laughs) – It almost has a cheesy taste to it. (upbeat music) (laughs) Okay, we just made it back to the hotel. Definitely the highlight for me today though, was that Muslim Yunnanese beef salad that aunty made. That was one of the dishes that I’ll never forget, ever. I wanna say a big thank you to Lucy, she was our guide today and she brought us everywhere. And also to Frank from Zouba Tours for organizing everything, he set everything up. And big thank you to you for watching this Chinese food tour of Yunnan video. Please remember to give it a thumbs up if you enjoyed it. I’d love to hear from you in the comments section below. A pergola that’s attached to your house can be a great addition it’s a good way to create a useful sheltered outdoor area and give you shade from the Sun it’ll also add to the visual appeal of your house with a bit of initial planning and prep building one yourself isn’t as hard as what you might think I’ll take you through the job step-by-step so you can do it yourself before you start there are a few important things that you need to know while you don’t actually need a building permit you will have to adhere to the building regulations so you’ll need to get a licensed building practitioner or LBP to help design it for you this will help you make sure that you’re doing it right and that you’re using the correct materials when designing the structure with your LBP there are a few things you should just keep in mind you want to make sure it’s high enough so the beam doesn’t obscure your view from inside you want to build it so it’s keeping with the overall style of your house and if you think you might want to put a roof on your pergola then it’ll need to be under 20 square meters and you’ll want to design it with a fall so that water can run off it right here’s the plan I’ve had drawn up by my LBP it’s got all the measurements I need and it tells me exactly what materials I need to order so all you need to do is take this into might of ten and the guys in the drive through will help you out with selecting the right materials and a trailer or delivery if you need now as per our plan our first post is going to be face fixed to the outside of the house here and it’s going to be inline with a corner now our second post will be on the outside of these steps and our third post there’s going to be right on the outside in line with the corner of the house so the first thing I need to do is get a parallel line from the house to the corner and put that mark down here so I know exactly where this post is going right so we’re just going to but the tape tied up against that weather border under the doorstep and we’ve got 2142 our quarter box I’m going to take that twenty-one woody measure that off their house for our end post okay there’s our 21:40 that’s to the outside of the post now if you’re in the situation where your pergola came to the end of your deck you could just put your post on the outside so you’re just digging straight into the earth but in this situation obviously we’ve got to remove a few dicking boards so we can dig a hole underneath the deck now this is just the rough guide at the stage where our post is going to be situated I will run a string line down the side of the house so I can get that pin pointed exactly correct so the next thing we need to do is remove some of the sticking board so we can actually start digging the hole where our post is going to go now a great little tool for pulling out the nails of these little dog bars absolutely brilliant take care when you’re removing your decking boards because you could reuse them these ones are badly split so I’ll be replacing them okay so I’m going to mark my 21 40 back on our joist here now I still need to get exact position this way and line with the house but I still know that my post hole is going to be about here so what I can do is start digging that hole and wind my post goes in or getting an exact position of it with a string line a little bit later on down the track now I’ve dug our hole nice and deep as per the specifications on the plan and also I’ll put a block of concrete on the bottom of here just so I’ve got nice and solid bearing for our posts to sit on now I’ve also run a string line down the side of the house parallel with the house I’ve run a string line a hundred millimetres from the side of the house this avoids any uneven surfaces on the side of the house that means that the distance from the string line to the corner is 63 millimeters now I want to be sixty three millimeters away from the line that’s up to the corner of our house so as you can see 63 millimeters that’s where our post is going to sit so we’ve got a joist in the way there’s nothing I can do about that I’m just going to clamp my post to the side of the Joyce and later on down the track I’ll show you how we compensate for that so now is the time put an outpost brace it up and put some concrete in now I’m just going to use this little clamp to hold that in position now I’ve just lined up my post without mark on our joist all I need to do now is plumb the post up and put a brace down now these posts that I am using are glue laminated and the h5 treated that way it’s not going to twist of water the best type of posts you can possibly use when you’re building up gola or a veranda I’ll just pull that clomp cool now that’s looking pretty good all I’ve got to do now is fix the end of my brace and then put some concrete in the hole okay just before I throw them a concrete in I want to get rid of my clamp to get that out of the way so I’m just going to screw off the post to our joist that’s going to be permanent from now on now I’ve got a pretty long post so what I want to do is just throw another support going back the other way and let’s just make sure that’s nice and plump cramp it off and then we’re good for our concrete you need to have at least 600 millimeters deep of concrete to secure your post rightio that’s looking pretty good now all I got to do is exactly the same for the other post let it sit for 24 hours and then we’re good to go to determine the position of the middle post I’ve run a string line from the corner of the house to the corner post radio I’ve let my two posts set in concrete for 24 hours now I’ve got one more post to attach but I don’t actually want to fix that to the house at this point because I want to chop the post off at exactly the right height now to get that height I first have to establish exactly where our ribbon plate is going to be attached to the house as per the plan the bottom of the ribbon plate needs to be 26 80 millimetres from the dig okay now this is just an example of what our Reuben plate is going to look like it’s going to be attached to the face of the weather boards like this now I have a couple of Packers that I’m going to attach behind the ribbon plate that’s to allow for any water to run down if it ever should get in there now this is also an example of what our rebate is going to look like now the rebate is safe we can have our rough to sit it and then quite nice and tidy like that what I need to do next is get a length of our ribbon plate now as for the dimensions on the plan it says it’s 2682 the underside of my ribbon plate so what I’m going to do is just put a nail in the weather boards at that height then I can use this nail to hook the tape on to get the length of our ribbon plate okay so that’s 5753 right the next thing I need to do is just make a level line on our weather boards to indicate the exact location on the bottom of the ribbon plate okay the next thing I need to do is establish exactly where our studs are now to do that is a couple of things you want to look out for the main thing is exactly where our nailing is so you can sort of see a little bit of paint cracking on the weather board that there indicates exactly where our stutters so we want to be looking out for the old nail lines and then just above our mark we want to put the center of our stud okay now it is important that we locate exactly where all the studs are because these are going to be our solid fixing points for when we put our Coach screws through the ribbon plate into the house rightio the next thing I need to do is just measure out exactly where all those marks are and I’m just going to write it on the weather board all these marks will be hidden by a ribbon plate I’ve marked the measurements of all the studs on the weather boards now it’s time to transfer them to the ribbon plate three three nine eight four nine ten the plan shows seven rafters for this pergola that’s a total of six spaces between them the overall length of the ribbon plate is five seven five three millimeters I’ve divided that by six and that’s given me a measurement of nine hundred and fifty nine millimeters Center to Center so nine fifty-nine is from the center of one rafter to the center of the next which is what we’re going to mark out now so now we’re just going to mark out the thickness of our rafter onto our ribbon plate so my rafter is 42 millimeters thick so I just want to divide that by two so I go 1/2 on either side of the line so that’s 21 millimeters either side of the center will just square that off so that’s one side there’s the center and then we’ll just use it the actual thickness of our rafter and put that on there and we’re just going to rebate that out later so we’re just going to do the same for all of our marks righty-o now I’m just about ready to rebait out my Ribbon plate so I’ve set my saw blade to about ten millimeters so I’m going to take a 10 mil rebate out of my ribbon now just before I rebate out I’m just going to use the side of my square with the side of a circular saw that’ll help me and give a nice straight line to make sure I’m up against my marks nice and tight I’m cutting a series of fins into the timber which I then simply remove with a chisel right now this looking lovely now we just want to do exactly the same for all the others now the most conventional way of attaching our rafters to our ribbon plate is just the face fix like this now the reason I’ve decided to rebait out our ribbon plate it’s just going to give me a stronger joint it’s going to stop all our rafters from twisting and also if you’ll get any sort of moving whatsoever in the house or the pergola that all that would do is open that up now our rebate is going to hide any sort of movement whatsoever now regardless whether you face fix or your rebate out your ribbon plate we’re still going to have to have a mechanical fixing now what I mean by mechanical fixing is something like a joist hanger or a multi group bracket sitting on the side there now that’s going to hold that they’re absolutely fine no problem the only thing is it looks absolutely terrible so I’m going to eliminate that and I’ve decided to nail the 12k end strap on the back with my rebate errs and then once my raft is going all I’m going to do is fold that over and now that down and that gives me a really nice strong mechanical fixing now these are the marks where my studs are on the wall now as per my specs on the plan it says my coat screws have to be no more than a meter apart which works out pretty good here obviously I’m not going to choose that one that’s hard up against where my rough that’s going to go so what I’ll do is I’ll just square the stem and do a hole and the center of that one and the same on this one here now we’ll just do the same for all the others okay now I’m using a twelvemonth coat screw so I’m going to draw a 13 mil hole through our ribbon plate you’ll need a mate to help you position the ribbon plate next I’m pre drilling the coke screw holes this is a timber we’re the board house if yours is different just refer to your plane rightio the next thing we need to do is attach our peckers to the back of our ribbon plate so I like in this example I’ve got a 20 mil thick Packer that’s what council rigs state now I’ve made these 45 mil foot wide so what I’m going to do is cut up a whole lot of Packers about 20 mil thick by 45 wide and then I’m just going to pin them to the back of our ribbon plate and then I’m going to tip the ribbon plate back over then I’m going to drill all the way through with our 13 model home and take that ribbon up to the wall all in one piece with the Packers attached rightio all the holes are drilled through our peckers now it’s the big thing I’ve to take this up and attach it to the house now as part of council regulations I’m attention neoprene washer and behind our packer so it sandwiches up nice and tight create a watertight seal between the house and our ribbon plate now nail each stretch to the back of the ribbon plate centered on each rebate radio I’ve got my Packers attached to the back of the ribbon plate the neoprene washers on there ready to go a pre drilled a hole McCoach screws are sitting in there nice ready to go as well and I’ve also attached our strap so what I have to do is attach it to the wall now we’re just going to make sure that we’re going to follow our line the whole way we’ll just kind of start from one end and work our way to the end obviously you’re going to need a mate to give you a hand now a great little tip when you are putting these up as use an impact driver and I’ve got a socket set attachment on the end that’s just going to make the whole job a lot easier now whilst I’m up the SCAF I thought I’ll just take all our dimensions of exactly where our rebates are on our ribbon plate then when I jump down I can mark them all out on our beam 28:58 now I want to put a 5 degree fall on this pergola say as per my plan if I put a level line from the top of my ribbon plate across I come down 193 that’ll give me exactly 5 degree 4 okay so that’s 193 now that is to the top of our beam now I’ve got a little cross section of our beam that there is going to sit flush on the outside and so what we’re going to do is just physically mark the bottom of our beam now that there is the top of our place so we can now measure that and cut out poster suit 23 82 okay my post has cut to length of attention for 20 more Packers on I’ve got the neoprene washer there I’ve drilled a hole all the way through the only thing I have to do now is attach this to the house now this is pretty much exactly the same as the way we touch their rim plate to the house fantastic right we’re all set up now to chop off the top of the other two posts just to recap the 193 millimeter measurement is from the top of the ribbon plate this gives us our five-degree full add the width of the beam to this and that’s the top of the post okay now what I’m going to do is exactly the same as on the other end I’m going to live it across from the top of our ribbon plate come down 193 193 now thickness of my beam okay there’s just one last thing I’m going to do to this post I’m going to put our beam back on it because our beam has got to be flush with the front of the post I’m just got to mark the backside because I’ve been 65 our post is 90 and I’m just going to cut a 45 degree on there that’ll create a nice little detail and then we’re going to string line from one end to the other and that’ll indicate exactly where to chop off the middle post so I’m just going to square across from our string line chop that off again just as we same as with every other one so let’s just give the edge just a light little took it up take off those sharp points enough to have done this we’ll just put a little bit of primer paint on there keep it all looking good the next thing I need to do is to get the overall length of the beam to do that I’m measuring from the outside of the post attached to the house to my string line I then come back 63 millimeters which gives me the length of the beam that’ll give me a dimension of five seven oh eight now that’s exactly what I’m going to cut my beam to ok the slope on my pergola is five degrees so I’m going to need to cut all the rafters at that five degrees so what I’m going to do is cut a scrap piece of timber five degrees and transfer that measurement onto the beam now I’ve already cut my beam to length using the old trusty circular saw okay so I’m just going to start marking out from all our dimensions that we got off the ribbon plate now just have to make sure that you put the rebate on the right side so I know all my marks are on my left the rebate will be on the right next one is 1901 now one of the reasons I cut five degrees on my little block of timber do always just square that mark down first now that five degrees is actually going to give me the exact length that our rebate out of now being righty-o I’ll sit meticulous order ten millimeters so I’m just going to rebate out now be ready for the rafters right here there’s looking absolutely lovely now the most conventional way of building a pergola is by setting our rafters on top of our beam now as you can see this just looks a whole lot nicer and neater by rebaiting them in now apply primer too albeit timber now the most conventional way that we attach our beam to our post is by using one of these bow Mac brackets and that will bolt all the way through our beam and our pace but you know what I really don’t like the look of this but I still need a mechanical fixing to attach our beam to our post so what I am actually going to use is the length of threaded rod so I’m going to drill a hole all the way through our beam and then into our post and we’re going to glue that in such a ok now it’s time to mark out exactly where our holes are going to go for our threaded rod so all I’ve done is push the beam hard up against our post I’ve ensured that it’s flush with that in here I know it’s overhanging here so all I have to do is just mark the center of the post on our beam now turn the beam over and square it from your centers to the middle of the beam for the position of your holes now just before I rip into drilling this hole what I have got here is a standard speed ball on the end of a drill extension now the great thing about these drill extensions you know pretty much most people have got speed ball sets at home so all I’ve done is put just extension that you can slot your standard drill bits into it now I’m using a 16 mil speed ball but I’ve got a 12 little threaded rod so that’s going to give me plenty of glue around the threaded rod when it goes into the timber okay so I just want to make the center of our posting just to do that I’m just going to make the diagonals cool and we just want to drill down about the length of our drill bit which is 130 millimeters now what is pretty important before we put our glue there we just want to make sure that we get all our dust out of there so you can either blow it out with a compressor or a little hand pump righty I’ve already pre-cut my threaded rod using my hacksaw now the lens for this was the length of our beam plus our 130 millimeters that went into our hole so now it’s time to go up our posts now the type of glue that I’m using to secure these bolts in place is a high performance epoxy anchoring system now this one is actually designed for concrete and timber so we’ll just pump this is a two-part epoxy so as we squeeze it out the two parts are mixing now we don’t want to stuff around too much on this because the glue can go off and hot weather pretty quickly righty-o obviously you’re going to need a mate to give your hand dropping us in place just take your time now we’re just going to fill that hole full of our epoxy and then link the two together with our threaded rod don’t be too shy of giving it too much we want that hole filled up completely nice so all I’m going to do drop our threaded rod in place and I’m going to let that go off overnight so in the meantime I’m just going to clamp the post to the beam so that doesn’t move while that’s sitting now I just want to repeat the same for other two posts right now it’s time to cut our rafters so there’s a couple of different ways we can get our length of our after I could use it with tape measure and actually physically measure and between our beam and our ribbon plate or I can actually just take and pitch the rafter that is slightly longer and all I’m going to do I just got that sitting on my nail and I’m going to place this on the outside and actually scribe it so no I can’t go wrong righty-right is my first rafter cut now I’m just got to slot that into position that’s footing nice and lovely now I’m going to use this as a template take this down the other end and just check to see if that fits in nice and tight that’s looking good I’ll just check it one more time in the middle of our beam and if that’s going in nice and tight there I’ll pre-cut all the rafters the same dimension now if you don’t feel confident cutting them all exactly the same you might want to just be sure as measure each one individually just double-check that we’re looking pretty good down here that’s a nice tight fit we’ll just check in the middle in right yeah this looking absolutely marvelous now I can pre cut all our after the deck of the same okay I’ve installed all the other rafters I’ve just saved this last one to show you what I have done is pre-drill a 5 millimeter hole through the front of our beam because I’m going to face folks through the beam with us 150 mil bugle screw now these absolutely fantastic I’m going to put them in with the impact driver I don’t need to worry about pre drilling into my rafters because all these are self tapping now down on the Reuben plate in what I’m attaching the rafters to the ribbon plate with these 10-gauge 3-inch Galvis okay one of the last things have to do before my purlins go on let’s just nail down our straps onto our rafters now we don’t need to fill up the strap every single hole as long as we’ve got a minimum of about six nails on there we’ll be good to go like I’m just about ready to put my peelings on now spm a plan it shows that I have four peelings sitting on top of the rafters so what I’m going to have is one on either end and two in the middle so all I’ve done is taking that dimension divided it by three that gives me my spaces so I’ve got a nail hooked and down the end I’ve got my chalk line attached to it so what I’m going to do is just give that a ping it’ll mark all my rafters repeal and sit on that side of the line now I’m ready for my parents’ use the same string line technique to mark the position of the other metal Pilon so it’s one pealing on the ribbon plate one on the beam and the other two evenly spaced in the middle I’m just flexing off my last peel and now obviously we’ve got our straps here we can’t nail through that so what I’m going to do is just pre-drill a hole through the middle strap then I’m just going to nail it on by hand look at that a great result let’s really transform the exterior of this house we’ve created an extra outdoor area ready to be enjoyed and by following the plans it was easy as
Hi so you’re interested in cloth nappies so this is my video about how to choose the right cloth nappies and it might be a little bit different to what you expect a lot of people just expect me to tell you which one is the best nappy that you can possibly get but unfortunately there’s not one nappy that’s the best nappy out of all the cloth nappies so let me take you through a few ideas on how you can get the best nappy for your baby without spending hours and hours of researching online reading about all the brands and I know you guys read the reviews and so let’s have a little bit of a chat about how to choose the best nappy without spending a lot of money and also to find out what’s going to suit your baby with your pregnant or you already have a baby so the first thing is there’s too many cloth nappies so this is where I find a lot of people go online and they start doing a bit of research to find the best nappy they read up on all the brands and of course every brand is the best brand and then they start reading the reviews and then some people just love the nappies and some people hate them the reason for that is because every single baby is different so you can’t get one cloth nappy that will suit all babies so what I want to do is take you through just some some very quick ideas the second thing is that people are looking when they’re pregnant and they haven’t seen the baby yet so when you’re pregnant and you haven’t got a baby you can’t buy the perfect cloth nappy for your baby because you haven’t seen it yet or experience what their toileting is like so you can’t choose a nappy before the baby’s born the third thing is that there’s lots of different fabrics there’s lots of different fasteners so how do you choose between those so basically my advice to you when you’re starting to look for cloth nappies is to stop researching just stop you don’t need to spend hours and hours wasted in front of your computer or your iPhone or whatever looking at different brands and different reviews what you need to do is basically get yourself set up with what I call a starter kit or a trial kit so what I put in a trial kit would be basically six nappies so what you need to do is get six nappies and this is really important you need to get six different brands so don’t go and buy six nappies of the same brand because all of the nappies are different for a reason for example we’ve got this nappy and this nappy so the difference between these two straight away ones velcro in one’s domes also this one has a leg gusset and this one doesn’t but it does have a elastic adjustable for the thigh sorry about that is always good and so also they’re totally different fabrics so this is where like these two nappies are both great nappies some love this one some hate it some love this one some hate it is basically because they are made for different babies what you need to do is basically go and buy five different nappies from different brands so I would get one of these I would get one of these I would also get one of these one of these and go through and you get five different nappy’s now it’s really good to get different styles as well so I tend to tell people in my workshops the best thing you can do is get a pre fold a fitted nappy a pocket nappy and all in one nappy in an all and two nappy that’s five different styles of cloth nappy and what that does is it gives you an experience with each different style as some people love pre folds and some people don’t so and some people love pockets and some people don’t so it just gives you a little bit of a starter pack to decide what you do and don’t like about the different nappy’s they all fit slightly differently someone can be but bulky but are more absorbent there’s all sorts of reasons why the different nappy’s are good the other thing you need to as make sure you get all different fabrics so we’ve got all sorts of fabrics available for cloth nappies you’ve got your synthetics your bamboos your Cotton’s and hemps there’s all sorts of different different fabrics available and you need to make sure you get a few of those different fabrics the main reason is you don’t know if your baby will react and if you just have all synthetic nappies and your baby has super sensitive skin or something like that and it reacts to synthetics if you don’t have a natural nappy to compare it to then you won’t know that it could be the fabric of the nappy not just like some people get worried about it being something sinister but it can just be the fabric or sometimes the washing powder but the other thing you need to consider is getting different fasteners because different fasteners are really important the velcro my husband really liked because it’s easy on Easy Off so basically when you’re putting it on a baby it’s super simple you put it on it’s done and what he found he’s a mechanic he gets really sore hands from working in the cars all day and he could not cope with coming home and doing up 6 to 8 poppers on on the nappies because he found it really really tricky and really quite fiddly to do them up so he much preferred the velcro nappies me being at home though I knew the value of popper nappies because with a Velcro nappy if you put a child to bed and you leave them and go and go in when they are waking up and they have a Velcro nappy and just always singlet on in the summertime what I found was my son could easily get the nappy off and he started painting the walls with the contents of the nappy which was not so awesome and that’s where I found the Popper nappies were super cool for children who can get out of the nappys and these are fantastic because it’s really hard for them to try and undo all the poppers and this is a great nappy to keep it contained in there when they are having a sleep if they do become a bit of a Houdini you can always turn it around so the poppers are on the back just for a challenge and but this if you’ve got both then you’ve got two different nappies so these were great when we’re out and about and we had clothes over the top and we wanted a quick nappy change but these ones here had their definite benefits as well especially at sleep times the other thing you need to consider is that by buying five nappies you’re gonna get a really good idea of the different styles how they fit and you’ll find that you probably love two of them like one or two of them and then dislike like the third or fourth or fifth one that you get and that’s completely normal because the baby every baby is different and what suits your best friend’s baby won’t necessarily suit your baby so the best thing is to spread out your options across some different styles and different fabrics like I said but the other thing is to also remember never get rid of any cloth nappies especially because a lot of them are birth to potty these days don’t get rid of them just because you don’t like them for a couple weeks put them aside because the baby’s constantly change so what fits them this week in two weeks time you may find starts leaking because their thighs have narrowed or they’ve got skinny waist and it starts leaking up the back so it’s you then might try the ones that weren’t working a couple of weeks ago and you might find that perfect what I actually find the best thing for most parents is a combination of brands there’s generally nobody who gets just one brand first time and it’s perfect all the way through they always have some challenges at different times but if you get four or five nappies have a go see what you like and don’t like try the fabrics try the domes and the velcro and then make an executive decision from your experience also when to start using cloth nappies is another thing and a lot of parents don’t know when the best time to start is basically it’s when you’re ready that’s the beauty about the beauty of cloth nappies is that you can try them this week maybe the baby is born this week and be like I want to start straightaway and do you know what if it doesn’t work out it’s no big deal just pop them in the wash give them a wash and then try them again next week if you want to start three weeks in great have a go if you have a really colicky baby like I did and I just ended up going one a day for quite a while then that’s fine too you don’t have to go all or nothing just start using them when you’re ready and then have a go and then you can you will make a better investment because you will actually know which nappies you liked and disliked and then you can invest sensibly going forward so I hope that helps you in the start of your cloth nappy making decisions I have lots of other videos about like the difference between birth to potty and sizes, washing all that sort of thing and so keep up with my youtube channel and hopefully you get on your cloth nappy journey soon

that’s on the bed that rich sage green which is like a spa we’ve got a beautiful gold a lilac the Pearl and the slate gray I know a lot of us love to decorate with grace we have that as well the sizes are full queen king and california king and the exciting thing is is no matter what size bed you have everybody pays the same thing today which is under twenty dollars our special guest is Karen LeBlanc is absolutely amazing she’s a decorator and design journalist and really all of your home decor tips hi miss you good to see you too so I am super excited about the damask print sheet set from Highgate Manor I wanted to bring you something that’s traditional but a fresh current interpretation so we’ve taken this timeless motif the damask pattern which you’ve seen a lot of woven jacquards we’ve translated it into a print put it on this comfy cozy sheet set in this nice serene on trend color palette and what we’ve done if you look closely at the top sheet you’ll see this beautiful large-scale damask print again that timeless motif it’s a tonal design so we’re looking at aqua so you’re looking at almost like a beautiful on the light aqua base and a darker turquoise tunnel print and we have of course the top sheet with a four-inch helm and I want to show you the hem here on the top sheet because it has this beautiful plate finish this really nice high-end designer detail and then look at the pillowcases these are so beautiful they can function on top of bed is an actual pillow sham because they’re just so stylish and again you have that 4 inch finished edge you have the nice pleated him and if you flip it over you’ll see that this beautiful damask tunnel print is both front and back all the way around now we paired it on the bed with pearls so we have the sheet set and pearl is just lovely this is so summer and spring fresh there aqua and pearl combination and the color palette itself I’m super thrilled about because we’ve done this in a nice soft restful serene color palette so again we have these we have the sage sage which is almost like a moss again with this tunnel demas different we have the platinum which is you can see the darker almost great exactly that tonal so it just still very soothing and again the gold and we have lilac yes very so just the right dose of color for something very serene and restful for the bed exactly well we already have an update even though these are brand-new we are already losing sizes in the California king so if that’s the size bed that you have definitely be in the ordering process if you want to make over your bedroom with this beautiful design Highgate Manor is all about refined luxury and that’s what this sheet set really embodies the job via Slee the the design is absolute pure elegance and so beautiful but the 500 thread count cotton blend this is actually a weightier sheet so you can feel the luxury you can feel the quality there’s nothing flimsy about this gorgeous absolutely the hand again just is so soft and feathery soft to the hand and that is because we’ve taken the best that cotton has to offer and we’ve blended it with just the right dose of microfiber so what we have is this amazing sheet that performs its wrinkle resistant it holds its color and it’s going to be resistant to shrinking and pilling and we’ve done that by taking cotton and mixing it with the microfiber so this is sixty percent cotton forty percent microfiber again the best of both worlds is created with this with the sheet set and so soft to the hand the yarns are brushed I have to point that out because that really does affect your sleep experience it’s very soothing to the touch and it’s mercerized which means it’s treated for that low maintenance high performance fabric exactly I was showing everybody the gold because I just think that this is pure elegance I think it is yeah it’s very rich it’s very luxe maybe if you’ve got the Burgundy’s in your room maybe you’ve got the Grays in your room I mean so much is going to go back with this or if you want to take the Aqua if you’re somebody that almost always doubles up on your your set of sheets because you like to get four pillowcases go for maybe the Aqua and the gold and switch out the top sheet fitted sheet because look at how absolutely beautiful springtime elegance this looks I love to mix colors I absolutely do I think that sheets these are show off sheets these are sheets that are part of your decor just like you dress your favorite outfit and you accessorize with your jewelry earrings think of your sheets as the ultimate accessory when you dress your bed so mixing and matching pattern in color right here i’m holding the lilac and the platinum i think this is just a gorgeous color combination but you can get really bold there’s a no-rules approach to pairing your colors you could do a lilac and sage you have so there’s just so many ways that you can play with these sheets and kind of create your own personal signature look and when we talk about creating our own signature look I think it’s really important to always be grounded in something traditional but updated with something fresh so traditional being this beautiful damask print this timeless motif damask has been around since the Middle Ages it was a woven technique that you know dates back to the Silk Road but what we’ve done is we’ve modernized it in this fresh current color palette the gold the pearl the Aqua the platinum the lilac and the sage all very popular colors right now in home interior yes and because this is such a gorgeous print if you look at this bed it looks absolutely stunning and stylish without a comforter without a dube but imagine like draping a maybe a white crisp white duvet right and holding it back to reveal this beautiful aqua isn’t that just such a sharp look it really is and you look at the sheet set and you think you would see this rich luxe design we have the break I want to lay back with the gold but you look at this and you think okay normally you would see a comforter with this beautiful design this is your sheets this is taking luxury to the next level and like you’re saying if you want like that crisp white duvet or if you’re somebody that loves to mix the patterns and which is you know so big right now if you look through all of the design magazines you’re mixing stripes in with your damage you’re missing making different prints and patterns into our home decor this is a great way to do that or again if you want to just get multiple sets and mix the colors together here is that slate gray back without beautiful gold does this not look like a million-dollar it really does this whole BTR looks that act or a lot of show homes as part of my job as a design gentleman and the damask is obviously a timeless popular decor element and these colors you’re seeing right now so this we have I have the lilac and the Pearl and again very serene but fashion-forward the lilac purple in all its hues super hot color right now in home decor so again if you really want to bring kind of update and refresh the look of your bed think of sheets I think we tend to take for granted the design power of a good sheet collection and they’re so fun to play with because you know back in the old days you have your standard white which everybody use because well they reason you can bleach them but we have so many great design choices at Highgate Manor that you really can discover your own design voice by playing around with different colors and patterns of your sheets and showing these sheets off as part of the way you dress your bed again lutely stunning you really are it it’s elegant it’s instantly elevating the look of your bedroom it is refreshing your bedroom for spring which we loved you know pre-event our home decor for a new season this is ten dollars off today it’s brand-new you’re the first one seeing it we’re launching it in our show today so enjoy the ten dollar savings and no matter what size bed you have and i am talking full queen king and california king and i mentioned we are becoming very limited on the california king so if you want that one please be in the ordering process but if you want that and california king be in the ordering process everybody pays the exact same thing though no matter what size bed you Phyllis so I have to just gush about the pearl doesn’t this almost look like have a beautiful almost lace effect Lynn tonal damask print doesn’t just kind of come across this is almost beautiful bridal lazy look their story depending on the color way I think that the damask sheet set really takes on different carry all right Karen thank you so much for being a part of our shiny anytime it was so fun always a pleasure having you here we’ll stay in the ordering process for your brand-new sheets and i do want to point out these incredibly plush amazing pillows that are on our bed our art eight our today’s special from concierge they are coming up is it tonight at midnight or monday these are coming up on monday so if you’re thinking gosh i need to refresh my pillows their old i didn’t get a good night’s sleep you have two pillows as your today’s special coming up for you monday night at midnight so i just want to show those off because those are sitting on the bed for you all right in today’s at. bamboo sheets
In this video I’m going to show you how to roll sushi. Rolling Square Sushi or Circular? When it comes to rolling sushi there are two schools of thought, there is a square school of thought and a circular school of thought. Now both are great, it doesn’t really matter, I mean just whatever you prefer to roll is what you should do. I like to mix and match because then I do one roll one way another roll another way, it adds diversity on the plate, you know? You can make beautiful color floral and you can also have them different shapes which makes it quite interesting to look at instead of just having the same plain shape.
Once you’ve decided to go circular or squared the next option is half a sheet or full sheet. Now a full sheet is easier because most people when they try to make a sushi roll they will overstuff the roll and then you won’t be able to close it. Now by using a full sheet you can use pretty much as much filling as you want and you’ll be more or less guaranteed that you’ll always be able to close it. Half a Nori Sheet Rolling The half a sheet Nori sushi roll is what is normally made in most sushi restaurants. You simply take a whole sheet of Nori and you just fold it in half and then just split and you just use half a sheet of Nori, as suggested, so just this. Now, the reason why this is used in most sushi restaurants is because you’re using way less Nori to start with and that’s saving costs. It’s quite efficient to roll it, it’s pretty fast, and it produces a nice square roll. Now how to do it. Spreading out Sushi Rice on Nori for Inside-Out Sushi Rolls What I am doing here is I’m spreading out 150-grams of cooked sushi rice or 5-ounces of cooked sushi rice over half a sheet of Nori.
Now you simply spread it out, nice and softly, don’t overdo it, that’s fine, it doesn’t have to be perfect, you just want to get a nice spread over it. Later when you roll the roll it spreads out the rice more evenly than compressed. Cover the Rice over the Entire Sheet of Nori Rolling Sushi Freehand You just add the avocado, and well it doesn’t matter – the filling. So I’m adding here some avocado and salmon, and you simply lift up the back, turn it over the filling keeping with your other fingers here, and then turning it over and pushing it in like so.
Then you just turn it over like so, and now you firm it up with a bamboo rolling mat. What I like to do is turn it on its side then firm it up again and turn it back to the original position and firm it up one more time. Turning it gives it a more uniform finish. Rolling an Inside-Out Sushi Roll with a Bamboo Rolling Mat You want to fully cover the sheet of Nori and now you want to flip it over, you want to place it on top of your bamboo rolling mat with a plastic bag over it. Now you bring it towards the end here, like so, you leave a little bit of space, and you add your filling. In this case some crab sticks and a little bit of cucumber, this is just to show, and now you begin the rolling. Just bring up the back of the mat, so you roll it forwards, holding in the filling with your fingers, and then you press in this way towards yourself, applying pressure on the back and firming it up like a square.
This gives it the square shape, by holding the sushi mat in the square shape. Now you detach, push it forward over to the next phase and just firm up that square piece. Now you do the same to make sure the roll is completely done and that’s it, now you just apply pressure from the sides and pressure on the top. You do this with both hands and using the index finger to press down and that creates a square roll. Rolling Towards Yourself or Away From Yourself? Now rolling it, you can roll it either away from yourself or towards yourself, I don’t really care as long as you just roll it.
Now most sushi chefs in the restaurants they roll it away from them, keeping the content of the roll in with the fingers and rolling it over with the thumb. Okay now when I started out I used to like rolling it towards me, and controlling the content with my thumbs and rolling it up forward, this way I could have visual contact with the food as you’re rolling it and you could see what was going on to correct it. Now the other way you can’t you have to curve over and look down underneath, it’s not as practical. I would say for beginners you probably want to start rolling towards yourself just to get some confidence and then when you can flip it over turn it around and do it the other way, away from yourself. Tips for Rolling Inside-Out Sushi Rolls Now I would say the best method is with the plastic bag around like so, it does get a little bit strange sometimes but if you just leave a little gap in the corner, so don’t completely seal it, that allows some air to flow in and out and then you get the compression, or if you could somehow vacuum seal this so you just completely have no air inside so that the rolling mat is just tight. This is the best method and if your rice still sticks to the plastic what you want to do is just run this under the tap, cold water, and even though there is no water on the plastic, you can see there are microscopic particles between the plastic and whatever you place on it, so when the rice comes in contact with it, it actually doesn’t stick to it.
The key to make sushi and not having the rice stick to your hands or anything around you is to have just a little bit of water just before you touch the rice. So either cutting it, rolling it, or touching it with your hands, even just to grab some rice, you want to always have them slightly damp, not wet, but just a little bit moist. Rolling a Maki Sushi Roll Alright the basics of how to roll a simple Maki roll is you just take your rice, you spread it out, but you leave a little gap about 3/4 of an inch long which would be about 1.5 centimeters.
Just simply spread it out and leave an imaginary line here where no rice comes over. Now you place your filling, in this case a little sliver of tuna in the middle of said rice, and then you simply bring over – now you can do this either by hand or with the help of a rolling mat. Now in the case of the rolling mat just simply place it over, bring the backend of the Nori towards the end of the rolling mat and you leave the empty side away from you. Now you roll it over and you close it so the seaweed paper meets the seaweed paper and there is no rice.
Okay, and then you simply roll it over, and there you go. This is how you make a simple squared Maki roll. How Should You Roll? I think you just find the style of sushi roll which suits you and just have fun doing it. How do you roll sushi? Leave your answers below in the comments section. END .
Hey guys, welcome to my fibres and fabrics series. In this video, part one, I’ll be talking about some common materials that you likely have or will come across. And what the pros and cons are for both everyday use and the environmental impact. Part two will be about vegan synthetic versus animal materials. And part 3 will be all about upcycled and recycled materials. So definitely check those out as well. So first up is cotton, and I’ll include time codes below for the different materials if you want to jump ahead or reference certain ones. Cotton is probably the most common fabric and it’s a natural fibre, it comes from the cotton plant And it is: soft, breathable (meaning that air can move through it and moisture can evaporate through it), easy to clean (it’s machine washable), absorbent, versatile ( there’s tons of different kinds of cotton materials and garments), it’s good for people with allergies or skin sensitivities The cons are that it doesn’t hold dye really well so it fades overtime and can also bleed while being washed.
It wrinkles, it can shrink in hot water, especially the first time it’s washed. The environmental pros are that it is biodegradable. And the environmental cons are that it needs a lot of water to grow. It’s also usually bleached and chemically treated and dyed. Cotton also has one of the highest pesticide uses for crops. And it’s generally GMO as well. But these two things are prevented by purchasing organic cotton. Next is Linen, and it’s another natural material It comes from the flax plant and it was used all the way back in ancient Egypt. And linen as a fibre is: breathable, durable, lightweight, absorbent, it’s generally very cool and good for summer time, I also read that it’s antimicrobial but I wasn’t able to find very much in-depth information to back that up The cons are that is wrinkles easily It often requires gentler or hand washing and sometimes there is fake linen or ‘linen look’ material so you have to be careful of that.
The environmental pros are that it requires little pesticides and water to grow, especially compared to cotton. And it is biodegradable. And the cons are that it can sometimes be dyed with toxic chemicals but it depends on how it’s made. Another plant fibre is hemp. And it comes from the cannabis plant but a type that’s only used for hemp production. And as a fibre it is: durable, absorbent, it becomes softer with wear and washing, it’s breathable and it can also be hypoallergenic. The cons are that it can sometimes be rough, it wrinkles and different countries sometimes have very strict laws around growing and processing hemp. So there are difficulties around that with hemp fabric production. The environmental pros are that it doesn’t require pesticides or lots of water to grow, It doesn’t deplete nutrients from the soils so it’s a really good crop.
It is biodegradable and because it’s very durable the garments usually last long And for environmental cons, I really couldn’t find anything. It’s basically seen as being the most eco-friendly material. Then there’s polyester, which is likely the most common synthetic fibre. It’s made from petrochemicals and is: wrinkle resistant, durable, it dries quickly it’s colourfast, it’s machine washable it tends to retain it’s shape well and it’s cheap. The cons are that it doesn’t breathe which can also cause it to become smelly, it builds up static and it can also irritate the skin. An environmental pro is that it can be recycled but this does require another chemical process. And the environmental cons are that it doesn’t biodegrade, fibres come off of it when it’s being washed and those end up polluting the ocean, it’s energy intensive and very polluting to make, toxic chemicals are used to make it and it’s also very difficult to dye which requires a lot of chemicals. Then we have wool. Wool is a natural protein fibre like your hair. And it mainly comes from sheep but can also come from alpacas, goats and other animals. Wool as a fibre is: very warm (it’s even warm when wet), water resistant, durable, very absorbent, flame resistant and hypoallergenic.
The cons are that it shrinks in hot water, it must be hand washed or dry cleaned, it can pill and depending on the kind of wool, it can be itchy or irritating to the skin. The environmental pros are that it’s easily dyed, which usually means there are less harsh chemicals used, it’s biodegradable and because it’s very durable it means that the garment will usually wear really well and can be kept for a long time. The environmental cons are that because it comes from an animal there are issues and concerns around the treatment and care and wellbeing of those animals.
And I will talk more about that in part two. Toxic chemicals and pesticides can also be used and this can be avoided by looking for organic wool. Next is acrylic which is a synthetic petrochemical fibre. It was developed to be a man made alternative to wool and it is: lightweight, soft, colourfast, machine washable and cheap. The cons are that it tends to pill easily it doesn’t breathe, it builds up static. For the environmental pros, I really couldn’t find anything. And the cons are that it doesn’t biodegrade, it’s not easily recycled, there are toxic chemicals used to make it, it’s energy intensive and again fibres wash off of it that end polluting the oceans.
Then there’s silk which is a natural protein fibre. It comes from the cocoon of the silk worm. And it is: very soft, it has a natural sheen, it’s lightweight has a good drape, so it generally looks very nice in clothing and it’s often good for very sensitive skin. The cons are that it’s expensive, it requires hand washing or dry cleaning, it’s not very durable and it’s susceptible to discolouration from sunlight or perspiration.
The environmental pros are that it is biodegradable, and it dyes very easily. And the environmental cons are that the silk worms are actually killed in the process of harvesting the silk from the cocoons so it is not at all an ethical or vegan material. Next is nylon another synthetic made from petrochemicals It was developed to be a synthetic replacement for silk. And it is: strong, weather resistant, versatile, water repellent, machine washable, it dries quickly and it’s cheap.
The cons are that some types of nylon build up static, it can irritate skin The environmental pros are that it is a pretty durable material so the garment will usually last a long time And for the cons, like with polyester, fibres come off when it’s washed that end up polluting the oceans, toxic chemicals are used to make it, there are a lot of harmful emissions, it’s energy intensive and it’s not biodegradable. Then there’s spandex, also called elastane or lycra. It’s a very elastic fibre also made from petrochemicals. And it’s usually found blended with other fibres. It is: stretchy, it helps clothes retain their shape, and it can help with fit. The cons are that it breaks down over time, it can also become brittle and yellow. The environmental pros are that it can help make clothes not stretch out and the environmental cons are that it doesn’t biodegrade, it’s energy intensive and polluting to make and toxic chemicals are used. Finally there’s a few naturally derived synthetic fibres. The first I’ll talk about is rayon and it’s primarily made from a wood pulp that goes through a chemical process.
And as a fibres it’s: soft, inexpensive, absorbent, anti-static, (unlike other synthetic materials), The cons are that it’s not very durable, it tends to pill, it wrinkles, it loses strength when wet and can easily become misshapen and it also shrinks very easily. I actually couldn’t really find any environment pros for rayon except for the fact that it uses less toxic chemicals than other synthetics but there’s still toxic chemicals, so I still see that as a con. Because it’s a wood pulp it can contribute to deforestation and it’s energy intensive to make. There’s also bamboo and the majority of bamboo is actually bamboo viscose or a bamboo rayon And countries have different laws about whether or not it has to be labeled as viscose derived from bamboo or a bamboo rayon. But basically it’s the same process as rayon but instead of using wood pulp, they use bamboo. And as a fibre it is soft, breathable, very absorbent, and also doesn’t build up static. The cons are that like rayon, some bamboo fabrics will pill really easily and I like I mentioned different countries will have different rules as how it’s supposed to be labeled so that can be confusing.
The environmental pros are that bamboo is very renewable to grow and requires little water and pesticides. And the cons are that there are still toxic chemicals used to make the material, and it’s energy intensive. And the last fibre I’m going to talk about is lyocell or tencel. And it’s another naturally derived synthetic made from wood pulp. And it is: soft, very absorbent, resistant to wrinkles, versatile, durable, breathable, anti-static and also claims to be hypoallergenic. The cons are that it can pill easily and also sometimes needs special care. The environmental pros are that it is biodegradable, It’s made in a closed loop system so the chemicals are recycled. And it’s much less toxic to produce than other synthetics and natural synthetics like rayon. The cons are that it is still uses quite a bit of energy to produce and because it does come from wood pulp it could also contribute to deforestation but overall it is the most environmentally friendly synthetic material.
So of course there are also other materials than the ones I’ve mentioned and you’ll also likely find a lot of blends. And blends can combine the benefits of both materials but it can also negate some of them. For example, a polyester/cotton blend will mean that the item is no longer biodegradable. As you’ve probably noticed, no material is perfect. And it’s just about trying your best to make informed decisions and also choosing the right materials for the function of the garment. I personally try to stick with natural materials for both comfort and environmental reasons. But it doesn’t make sense all the time. For example with swimwear, it makes much more sense to have something that doesn’t absorb water and dries quickly. So I hope you’ve found this interesting and maybe learned something. Please let me know in the comments if they are any pros or cons that I missed.
Thank you so much for watching and I’ll see you in the next one. .

It’s great to see so much natural timber coming out from under the rug. Literally thousands of people are ripping up there carpets to reveal beautiful natural timber floor boards. Da daaaaaaaaaaaaa Oh, it’s concrete. I knew that. But it’s ok because we are going to show you how to lay a beautiful natural timber floor on this concrete pad. We are going to lay the floor using the direct stick method. Which actually means we are going to glue it and nail it to the concrete pad. Before you begin, your timber floor supplier should be able to check moisture levels in the slab to make sure it’s dry enough. There is a large range of colours, grains and varieties of solid timber floors available. The one we have chosen is this light coloured oak, it’s going to work really well with the colours we are going to paint the walls. It’s 80mm wide and 12mm thick. We start by marking and checking out the door frame so that the end bead fits neatly underneath. We are going to lay the boards this way, always start with your longest run. Now the timber is cut to size, the fitting of the first plank is very important.
It’s gotta be in exactly the right place. To allow for a 10mm expansion gap down this side we have marked the wall an extra 10mm out here. Using polyurethane adhesive, we glue and nail one end of the first board. This must be set absolutely straight, as it is a guide for the rest of the floor. So the very next job in getting this first board absolutely true is to run a string line so we can fix this. Just pull it tight Dene. Oh and have you got the pencil and ruler.. Thanks… Using the string line as a guide, nail and paint the first board.
The glue is then evenly spread onto the floor and we can start to lay the timber. Well the glue is spread nice and consistently. It’s very important because if you don’t get that bit right, you get lumps and bumps. We have measured and allowed enough glue for 10 boards. We are going to put those in and then we are going to clamp it. Now at this point, once our first 10 boards are down we clamp using these clamps which you can hire from the retailer. Just to close all these gaps up and then we fix and nail the first board or the last board down to hold it all in place. Then we remove the clamps and continue on our way. When you clamping it you make sure that you use an off cut as a block, just to protect the tongue on the side of the timber there. Once clamped, we check for raised for raised or drummy stops.
We then drill and nail to fix. You right on the end? Yep? We then continue laying the boards which we have cut at random to create a staggered pattern. Well that’s great we are getting there. Looks good. Very good. Well it’s looking great so far, we have almost come to the end of the laying. The next bit is the sanding and we’re not going to do that are we. No I think that calls for an expert. Our expert floor sander uses this vast array of specialist equipment to produce a brilliant finish on our timber floor.
There are 16 separate steps in the process. He starts with a fairly course paper and then sands both across the boards diagonally, and then along the grain to ensure a dead flat surface. Corners are hand levelled and sanded to ensure an even professional result. Any imperfections or nail holes are hand filled and sanded. The grade of papers are then reduced over separate sanding, finishing with a buffing mat or disc. He then applies the finish over 3 separate coatings. And we end up with a superb job on our beautiful solid timber floor. Well, we did it. Yeah apart from the sanding. As you have seen sanding can be a little bit tricky. I agree, sanding and polishing is defiantly a job for the experts. But it looks great. It looks fantastic. .
Welcome back! Today I’m going to make a Japanese-style bed. These beds are lower than western ones, with the mattress embedded in a wooden frame. I’ve tried to come up with a design that would be easy to make using plywood, although other kinds of wooden sheets could also be used. Besides, this design is easy to assemble and disassemble, quite convenient if we want to move. I’ve designed two types of bed. This one is meant to be adapted to a common metal bed frame which you can find in any store. As you can see, the bed frame rests on these four corners which, in turn, join all the pieces. The other bed design is of the same size. However, for this design we’ll use a homemade plywood frame. In this video I’ll show you how I made the first of the two models, although both beds have similar makes. By changing the length of some pieces we can adapt this design to any bed size. Now let’s take a look at how I made it. This time around, in order to save time I’ve ordered some pre-cut pieces from the same warehouse where I bought the board, since the parts are quite large.
I’ll start by cutting these pieces at an angle. They’ll be used to make the headboard thicker. I’ll also machine this rebate to work around the floor plinth. I’ll also glue these pieces together, onto which I will later screw the bed side rails. Now I glue the three upper side rails together to make them thicker. I machine these pieces like this and put them in place with glue. I sand these parts now that it’s easier and screw the bed side rails in like this. Now I can start assembling the bed. I cut these two pieces in half to make four supports for the bed frame. First I screw this one onto the side rails, keeping it 1mm away from the edge. I remove the piece and then screw it onto the headboard.
This way, when screwing it back on, the screws will put pressure and the joint between the side rail and the headboard will be tighter. I’ll use the same system for the back. I’ve numbered all the corners to make future assemblies easier. With these last screws I finish putting the bed together. Now it’s time to set up the nightstands. I glue these parts together and add a little salt to stop them from moving due to the glue’s viscosity. Once the glue is dry, I sand the inner part now that it’s easier and continue assembling the nightstands. I finish sanding all the pieces that make up the bed and apply three coats of satin water-based varnish. I’m going to put everything back together at the workshop to see what the finished bed looks like.
I love how the edge of the plywood looks. Of course, we could apply some dye to change the color, but I like the natural look of birch wood. .

Today is going to be super exciting. Bulletproof cars have been around for a while. Today we’re going to see how durable a bulletproof car really is. We have governments, we have the president of the United States, we have famous people, and a lot of them use bulletproof cars for protection. And today we’re going to see how durable the glass is, how durable the paneling is inside those doors, and we’re going to do it in real life with real guns. Now if you don’t like guns, that’s fine, we’re also going to focus on the construction of the bulletproof paneling Let’s get started. Before we destroy anything, let me show you what we’re working with. A company called Armor Max here in Utah was nice enough to donate some glass panels for us to shoot. And we have two glass panels here today. One is for a smaller caliber gun, like a little pistol, like a 9 millimeter.
And the other piece of glass is for a larger caliber rifle like the one I used in my bump stock video, the AR 15. So it really just depends on how much protection you want for your vehicle. This is the 9mm that we’ll be shooting at the glass. And this is the thinner pane. And then over here we have the AR 15 with the bump stock attached. We’re just going to be shooting single rounds today though. You can see the larger caliber here, and how thick the pane of glass is compared to the lower caliber. But really all of this stuff is completely customizable. Like the president’s motorcade here in the United States uses about double this thickness of glass inside. It really just depends on how much protection you want, and how much you’re willing to spend. As far as weight goes, when they’re bulletproofing a car with the smaller caliber, you know, bulletproofing it for a hand gun, it usually adds anywhere from 400-500 pounds give or take the protection you want.
But if you’re going to fully rifle proof your car, you can add anywhere from 500 all they way up to maybe 12 or 13 hundred. Your gas mileage might go down slightly, but sometimes that’s a good trade off for the protection it offers. So gun ranges are actually pretty cool. So right here we have different slots. Gun safety is a pretty big thing when you’re at a gun range.
Each of these little cubicles keep, you know, the bullets that are ejected out of the gun, they keep it from hitting your neighbor. And then as we walk down range…right now it’s safe because there’s no one out shooting in here. This is one of the pieces of glass that we’re going to be shooting at. So we have it propped up. We have some of these little green targets right here just so we have something to aim at while we’re shooting. And then we also have one little melon right behind it. So if the bullet goes through the bulletproof glass, which it shouldn’t, we’ll know for sure. Now down here at the end of the range is something that not a lot of people see. This is what directs the bullets into this channel down here at the end so that they can recycle all of those bullet tips because there’s a lot of metal in a bullet and it’s always good to recycle. So you can see here all of these little markings are little bullets that have hit this metal panel right here and then rickashayed up there into that little slot so they can collect them and recycle them.
Alright, so we’re going to start with the 9mm hand gun first. We’re going to shoot that pane of glass right down there. Let’s do it. Oh man! That looks sweet. Let’s go take a closer look. Check this out! Oh man, that’s so cool. You can see the impact point right here. You can see a little bit of remnants of like the metal in the tip of the bullet. And then it like absorbed the impact and fractured all the way around this outside. So here on the backside it’s still 100% completely smooth. My fingers aren’t catching on any of the glass layers on the back of this. If you are sitting inside of this car with this window, you would still be totally fine. Now these layers of bulletproof glass are actually layers of glass and plastic stuck together.
So it will actually be interesting to see what kind of penetration we can get when we start shooting the rifle on the AR 15. But half an inch stopping a bullet…that’s pretty impressive. So we have the cameras set up and our safety gear on. We’re going to shoot that same piece of glass a couple more times with the 9mm and see how well it stands up to multiple shots. Alight, so safety gear is on. I imagine if you’re being shot at inside of a car it’s not going to be just one bullet. There are going to be multiple. So I’m going to empty this full magazine into the glass and see what happens. Ready? Sweet! That was fun. Okay, so check this out. It looks like I hit this part multiple times. I think there was an impact point here, here, here, here and here.
As the outside structure of the glass is compromised, it removes the outer layer but the inner layers are still fine. You can see like this divot right here. If the glass is an inch thick, this probably went through about half an inch of that but it still survived…I mean how many shots was that, like 6? So if we go back here to the back of the glass, you know, feeling the back of it, there’s nothing catching on my hand, but as I move my hand over this I can feel like a slight indention and I imagine that’s like the plastic layer bulging out just a tiny bit.
Ummm, agh! Yeah, careful, I just did that. I got glass in my finger. Alright, so we’re not going to touch the glass anymore. When the bullet hits, there’s so much energy in that bullet, it impacts the glass obviously, and the glass distributes the impact over the whole thing. So not everything you see in Hollywood it truthful because if a bullet hits a car it’s going to shatter the exterior layer of the ballistic glass at least. Alright, so we have a new glass in place and this one is an inch and a half thick, so it’s going to need the AR 15, the higher caliber bullet.
And we’ll see if that melon survives. Alright, so the safety is now off. And full disclosure, I have not sighted this gun, so if I miss first shot… Oh wow! Okay, so that was pretty sweet. So the impact of that bullet hit right here in the center and we can already see…like this is an inch and a half thick. You can also see the divot from the glass, you know, separating from the point of impact. The energy, instead of going forward, it immediately stops the forward energy and disperses it in the outward glass. And these cracks look freaking incredible. And this is the size of the bullet that hit that center impact part, right there. And I think this is one of those plastic layers inside.
Let’s see if we have any damage on the back. That’s sweet. There’s no damage on the back of this thing. So if you were sitting inside of this car, you would be completely safe from someone shooting an AR 15 at your window. So everything that’s manufactured has like a rating to it. So this piece of glass is certified for 5 bullets, but Armor Max has shot this thing 20 times and it still survived which is pretty darn impressive. So we just finished shooting the ballistic glass. We’re still going to shoot some of the ballistic armor panels here in a second, but let’s check out the laboratory of Armor Max first and see how all of this stuff is put together. And there’s actually quite a lot that goes into this. So this stuff right here, this is like a little bomb proof blanket that can actually sit down underneath the carpet inside of the car. So like if a grenade or something is rolled underneath the vehicle, you know, it’s full of kevlar and stuff and stops the explosion from coming up inside of the cab.
Now normally, when you’re sitting inside of a car, you’re hidden and protected by the door and the window. So that’s like one of the most important parts of bulletproofing a car is the glass and the door panels. So this is a land cruiser right here, and this is the bulletproof glass, the same stuff that we were shooting at earlier. You can kind of tell how thick this panel is. But because of the weight of the bulletproof glass, they actually have to stick new motors inside of the door. So these are specialized motors that can lift the 60 pound slab of glass. So the slab of glass will protect the top half of the person, and the rest of the door is fitted with these bulletproof panels here inside. We haven’t shot any of these panels yet, but I’ll make sure we get a chance before we leave.
So we talked about how to protect the driver inside, and now here in the front, protecting the engine is another important concept. So here we have bulletproof panels that are set at an angle and go all the way down in front of the radiator cuz the radiator is what keeps the engine cool. And if you’re radiator is bleeding out then your car is not going to go very far. So these bulletproof panels right here are pretty important. There’s also the same bulletproof panels that we have inside of the metal panels here inside of this, as well as protecting the firewall between the engine and the passenger compartment.
And then here we have a few more bulletproof panels protecting the battery, cuz also without the battery you’re not going to be going very far. Another bulletproof panel here protecting the air intake. And inside of the tires they have something called a run flat, which is basically a metal band on the rim of the tire that sticks up past the rim. So even if there’s no air in your tire and the tire’s technically flat, you’ll still be able to drive on that metal rim inside of the actual tire. So like I mentioned before, there are a couple different packages that Armor Max offers. And so this is one of them here. It’s like an optional piece. This has that like bulletproofing rounds cuz this is one of the weakest points when a door is closed that if bullet pierces right here your head is still going to be on the other side. So this just adds another layer of protection. You’ll have bulletproof glass on the windshield. For that 20-25,000 dollars all of the main things will be protected, you know, you inside of the cab.
But it can go anywhere from 70,000 all the way up to the top with Armor piercing rounds and stuff like that. It has, remember that 2 inch thick piece of glass? If you have that installed in your door panel, obviously the windows aren’t going to work anymore, but that’s the most protection that you can have while you’re driving. So one of the things when you’re adding so much more weight to the vehicle, like those panes of glass weigh a lot, it’s anywhere from 500 to 1,000 pounds, maybe a little over that. Sometimes they have to upgrade the suspension as well. So this suspension is calibrated for the extra weight and it will still ride the same, you know, just as smooth as a stock vehicle, even though this one’s completely bulletproof. So this isn’t a sponsored video, I just thought it was pretty cool technology. And this company, Armor Max, has been in business for over 25 years. They’ve had over 250 known attacks on their vehicles but no one has died from being shot through the Armor on their vehicles. So it’s pretty good stuff.
But it’s also interesting to know that this stuff does happen. Like there are dangerous places in the world. So seeing how the technology is able to protect people is pretty interesting. If everyone could just be nice to each other, companies like this wouldn’t need to exist. But since there’s niceness problems in the world, here we are. This car right behind me actually has electrified door handles. Dan doesn’t know yet, from the YouTube channel What’s Inside. So I’m going to tell him to open up the door to see what’s inside of the car and see what happens.
See what he says about the steering wheel. Oh! Is this the shock door? Is this this shock door?! Ahhh! You almost got me! Do it anyway, do it anyway! I don’t want to get shocked! You gotta do it! I’m going in! Is it going to hurt? It’s going to hurt. I can’t do it! Ahh! Okay, I feel it, I feel it! It shocked me! So there was a button back here that he just pushed…no way, check this out! So this is like…you can drop this behind you like if someone’s chasing your car. That’s hilarious. So literally, if someone’s chasing you, you can drop this little compartment in the back and these things fall out. They will like puncture the tires of all the cars that are behind you. That’s awesome. So it’s pretty sweet. So one of these buttons right here, he just had them labeled, so one of them is dropping the tacks, you know, the things in the road. And the other one, this is the one that electrifies the door handles.
So obviously as the car is driving these will be bouncing on the road behind and disperse all over the lanes, and then this box right here just folds up and clicks shut. Now he’s got to figure out how to stick these all back in there and get it locked and loaded for the next guy. Okay, so since Dan wouldn’t really grab the doorknob, I’m going to give it a shot. I’ve been tased before with that little case, but I think this one’s a little bit higher voltage and I am super nervous right now. This is not something I planned on doing today. Are we good? Did you get it? Okay, so I felt a tingle from the tip of my finger all the way up to about here.
So I’m going to try it again. Oo yeah. You can feel it all the way up your arm. It’s stronger than that cell phone case that I reviewed a while back, you know, the taser cell phone case. It’s not something I want to do for a long period of time. When the car is actually turned on and the engine is running, there’s way more current going through that. So what I was able to do right there would be completely different if the car was on. So here’s a close up shot of those electrified door handles.
You can see the copper strips on the inside. So any time someone just reaches in and grabs these, grabbing the copper, it will jolt their whole arm…like you saw earlier. Alright, so we’ve seen the cars and we’ve seen the glass, now we’re going to shoot at some of the Armor Max paneling that goes inside of the car doors. Now this stuff is lighter than steel, which makes it ideal for putting in cars because the more weight you have in a car, the more the gas mileage goes down and the slower it gets. So lightweight cars are good. But this stuff is actually so light that they’ve stuck it in helicopters, the ones in South Africa, the anti-poaching helicopters, which is pretty sweet. So this piece right here is for the larger caliber rifles, but we also have this smaller piece of Armor Max material that stops 9mm hand guns.
So let’s shoot both of these right now and see what happens. So this square panel, this is the Armor Max 3.3, it’s the same stuff they stuck on the anti-poaching helicopters. We’re going to shoot it with a 9mm and see what happens. Let’s try it out. So the bullet traveled, punctured into here and then traveled up inside of it. Because apparently there are 156 different laminate layers inside of this thing keeping the bullets from penetrating to the important stuff on the other side of the material. So we’re going to empty the rest of the magazine inside of my 9mm and see what happens with the rest of the bullets. And then we’ll switch to the bigger caliber guns. Alright, so there are about 5 more shots in this. We’re going to put all of them straight into the material and see what it looks like after we’re done. That is crazy. It looks like there is absolutely no damage done to this, but you can see tiny little pinpricks where each of the bullets hit.
And all of the bullets have been captured inside of the material. That’s a 9mm bullet, you know, the smaller ones. Now we’re going to try the AR 15, and that should make a mark. Okay, so this is the AR 15. The safety is now off. Let’s see what happens. So looking at the outside, seriously, there are seriously no marks on the material which is like incredible. But here on the backside you can see a small little divot where the bullet hit. So it’s just like this little tiny bulge.
Personally, I would feel super safe inside of a helicopter or a car with this lightweight material inside of it protecting against the bullets. Even with an AR 15, stopping that much power is incredible. So this piece of material is rated, you know, within a 5 inch radius it can be shot 3-5 times and still maintain it’s structural integrity. But when you’re in a moving vehicle and somebody is shooting at you, which does happen, Armor Max has had cars with like 100 shots in them. The bullets are all spread out. Like no one’s going to consistently shoot in one spot over and over again. So overall today was a pretty fun day. You know, shooting guns is always a fun hobby for me, and whether you like guns or you don’t like guns, it’s still fun to see the science and technology behind armored cars and armored helicopters.
I did not know that they armored those and anti-poaching helicopters in Africa. If you have any questions, leave them down in the comments. I’m sure I could be back here later to answer those questions or to blow up something else. Come hang out with me on Instagram and Twitter. And thanks a ton for watching. I’ll see you around. .
